The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) and the MaREI Centre at University College Cork invite applications for a 35-month, full-time post-doctoral researcher position as part of the government-funded ObSERVE III project. This project aims to update information on the distribution and abundance of marine megafauna within the Irish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) through a series of aerial surveys. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering an ambitious aerial survey programme, including participation in surveys during summer, autumn, and winter of 2026 and 2027, and will be responsible for identifying and recording marine species, organizing survey logistics, liaising with aircraft operators, and analyzing sightings data for species distribution modelling.

The post is based at University College Cork, a leading Irish institution recognized for its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. The research will be conducted within the dynamic environment of BEES and the MaREI Centre, both of which are renowned for their contributions to marine and environmental science. The position offers a competitive salary on the IUA PD1 scale (€46,805 - €53,391 per annum) and is fully funded for the duration of the project.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in environmental science, marine biology, or a closely related discipline, and demonstrate excellent English language proficiency. Experience with aerial surveys, marine species identification, data analysis, and survey logistics is highly desirable. Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may be required. The position is open to candidates who have not previously completed PD1 or PD2 levels in another Irish HEI at a similar level.
