About this position

The School of English and Digital Humanities at University College Cork invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to lead the Branding & Cultural Economy strand of the NorseMap Project. This ERC-funded, five-year initiative uses citizen science methodologies to map the Viking legacy across Europe, focusing on the evolution of responses to the Viking past and its commercialisation in contemporary society.

The successful candidate will have expertise in Old Norse-Viking Studies and/or Cultural Economics, with a strong research background in branding, marketing, and commercialisation activities. The role involves gathering data on the present-day commercialisation of the Vikings through group-sourcing projects, stakeholder interviews, and public engagement initiatives. In later project years, this data will be combined with archival research to produce a monograph detailing the evolution of the Viking brand from historical roots to modern commercial exploitation.

Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant area (Old Norse Viking Studies, Cultural Economics, or an adjacent discipline) and demonstrate independent publication, digital literacy, and proficiency in both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Experience in marketing campaigns, economic theory applied to art and culture, and creative research dissemination (including social media) is highly valued. Working knowledge of one or more European languages beyond English is desirable, as is prior published work on branding and commercialisation of the Viking past.

The position offers the opportunity to join an international research team, contribute to high-impact dissemination activities, and engage with non-academic stakeholders. Responsibilities include supporting postgraduate students, grant writing, project management, and contributing to the financial management of research projects. The candidate will also play a key role in public engagement and community collection initiatives, helping to map the legacy of a cultural phenomenon.

Applications should be submitted online via the University College Cork website. For further information, contact [email protected]. The application deadline is 24 April 2026, and the position is based in Cork, Ireland. This is a full-time, temporary contract, not funded by the EU Research Framework Programme.
