About this position
This postdoctoral position at University College Cork (UCC) offers an exciting opportunity to join the BRACE project, part of the Met Éireann TRANSLATE initiative, focusing on climate adaptation engineering and quantitative risk assessment for critical infrastructure. The role is based in the School of Engineering and Architecture and is open to candidates at both Post-Doctoral and Senior Post-Doctoral levels, depending on qualifications and experience.
The BRACE project aims to advance understanding of future extreme weather events in Ireland and develop climate impact and risk assessments for various sectors. The successful candidate will contribute to the creation of risk-based decision support tools, helping to determine Ireland’s future climate risks and inform climate adaptation planning. The research will build upon previous TRANSLATE phases, developing detailed quantitative risk assessments that consider cross-sectoral aspects and compounding/cascading events, with a focus on Irish case studies in critical infrastructure domains.
The postdoctoral researcher will join a dynamic, international team engaged in leading research in climate adaptation engineering, probabilistic assessment, and GIS modelling. Collaboration will extend to academics from the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, and the Irish Centre for High End Computing (ICHEC). Primary duties include numerical modelling, risk analysis, project coordination, and publishing in high-ranking academic journals.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Engineering or a related discipline, possess strong engineering and analytical skills, and demonstrate proficiency in computer modelling (MATLAB or Python). A comprehensive understanding of statistics and statistical modelling is essential. Experience in probabilistic modelling, quantitative risk assessment, flood modelling, or drainage system design/modelling is advantageous. Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Garda vetting and/or international police clearance may be part of the selection process.
The position is funded for two years, with a salary range of €46,805-€53,391 p.a. for Post-Doctoral Researchers and €54,850-€59,654 p.a. for Senior Post-Doctoral Researchers, in accordance with public sector pay policy. Extension of the post is possible through securing further funding. UCC is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, holding a Silver Athena SWAN award and offering flexible working schemes, family-friendly policies, and staff networks.
Applications must be submitted online via the UCC vacancy portal (https://ore.ucc.ie/) before 12 noon (Irish Local Time) on Friday 22nd May 2026. For informal enquiries, contact Dr. Páraic Ryan, Senior Lecturer, Discipline of Civil Engineering, at [email protected]. For further information on the department, visit Engineering and Architecture | University College Cork. Queries about the application process should be directed to [email protected], quoting the job title. No late applications will be accepted.
