About this position

Ghent University is offering a 3-year postdoctoral position focused on the numerical simulation of composite hydrogen tanks, a critical component in the transition towards a hydrogen economy. Belgium is a leader in hydrogen technologies, with a vast pipeline network and strategic importance in Western Europe. The UGent-MMS research group, in partnership with leading automotive companies, is developing advanced composite solutions for hydrogen storage tanks used in vehicles and refueling stations. The success of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles depends on safe storage options and robust refueling infrastructure, making this research highly relevant.

The postdoctoral researcher will engage in finite element modelling and design of pressurized composite tanks under various operational conditions, including pressurization, depletion, and thermomechanical loads. The role involves close collaboration with industrial partners and a multidisciplinary team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. The group is dynamic, with 8 postdocs and 15 PhD students, and has a strong track record of successful PhD completions and impactful research.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. A strong interest in computational mechanics of composite materials and familiarity with mechanics of materials and experimental or computational techniques are essential. English proficiency in writing and speaking is required; Dutch is not mandatory. The position offers access to extensive experimental and numerical facilities, including Linux workstations and a high-performance computing cluster with over 2000 cores. Opportunities for international exchange, conference attendance, and publication in peer-reviewed journals are encouraged.

Funding includes a net salary starting from 2900 EUR/month (after taxes), with increases for dependents and seniority. Additional benefits cover public transport and bicycle compensation, hospitalization insurance, sport accommodations, reductions on computer and internet purchases, fitness, and a private workspace. The university provides support for international students through active student associations and regional platforms.

To apply, candidates should prepare a detailed CV in Dutch or English, including personal details, education, transcripts, work experience, skills, languages, and references. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem. For more information, visit the research group website or contact Prof. Van Paepegem directly. The research group brochure is available online for further insights into ongoing projects and facilities.
