About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a 3-year postdoctoral position focused on the numerical simulation of composite hydrogen tanks. Belgium is at the forefront of the hydrogen economy, with a robust network of companies and research institutes, and Ghent University (UGent) is contributing to this transition through advanced research in hydrogen storage solutions. The position is embedded within the Mechanics of Materials and Structures (MMS) group, which is a partner in a major research project involving leading automotive industry companies. The project aims to develop innovative composite solutions for future hydrogen storage tanks, crucial for both vehicles and refueling infrastructure.
The postdoctoral researcher will concentrate on finite element modelling and the design of pressurized composite tanks under various operational conditions, including pressurization, depletion, and thermomechanical loads. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with industrial partners and a multidisciplinary team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. The group offers a dynamic environment with access to state-of-the-art experimental and numerical facilities, including high-performance computing clusters and extensive laboratory resources.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree and have a strong background in computational mechanics of composite materials. Preferred educational backgrounds include Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields. Familiarity with mechanics of materials and experimental or computational techniques is essential. Proficiency in English is required, while Dutch is not mandatory. The position encourages active collaboration with industry and academia, and offers opportunities for international exchange and conference participation.
The salary for postdoctoral researchers starts at 2900 EUR net per month (after taxes), with increases for dependents and seniority. Additional benefits include compensation for public transport and bicycles, hospitalization insurance, access to sports facilities, and discounts on technology and fitness. The university provides a supportive environment for international researchers, with dedicated platforms and student associations.
To apply, candidates should prepare a detailed CV in Dutch or English, including personal details, education, thesis topics, transcripts, work experience, skills, languages, and references. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem. For further information, applicants can consult the research group’s website or contact Prof. Van Paepegem directly.
