About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a 4-year postdoctoral position focused on the simulation and optimization of snap fit joints. This research project, coordinated by the Mechanics of Materials and Structures (MMS) group, addresses advanced snap fit joints used in construction, automotive, and consumer goods, emphasizing their importance for disassembly, recycling, and repair. The project is funded by Flanders Make and involves collaboration with KU Leuven and ten industrial partners.
The successful candidate will develop advanced finite element analysis techniques to optimize the design and assess the long-term performance of complex snap fit joints, considering factors such as friction, strain rate, geometric nonlinearity, and manufacturing tolerances. The role includes project coordination, co-supervision of PhD students, and active engagement with industrial partners.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong interest in computational mechanics of materials. Experience with finite element software and experimental or computational techniques is required. Proficiency in English is essential; Dutch is not mandatory.
The MMS group offers a dynamic research environment with access to high-performance computing clusters, extensive experimental and numerical facilities, and opportunities for international exchange and conference participation. The group currently includes 8 postdocs and 15 PhD students, with a strong track record of successful PhD completions and industrial collaborations.
The position offers a net salary starting from 2900 EUR/month (after taxes), with increases for dependents and seniority. Additional benefits include compensation for public transport and bicycle use, hospitalization insurance, access to sports facilities, and discounts on technology and fitness. The university provides support for international researchers through active student associations and regional platforms.
To apply, candidates should prepare a detailed CV (in Dutch or English) covering personal details, education, thesis subject, transcripts, work experience, skills, languages, and references. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem ([email protected]). For further information, applicants may consult the research group website or contact Prof. Van Paepegem directly.
