About this position
Ghent University is offering a 4-year postdoctoral position focused on the simulation and optimization of snap fit joints, a critical connection type used in construction, automotive, medical devices, and consumer goods. The project, coordinated by the Mechanics of Materials and Structures (MMS) group at UGent, is funded by Flanders Make and involves collaboration with KU Leuven and ten industry partners. The research targets complex snap fit joints found in window profiles, laminate flooring, and injection moulded automotive parts, emphasizing their performance under friction, strain rate, geometric nonlinearity, and manufacturing tolerances, as well as their long-term durability against environmental ageing and creep.
The postdoc will develop advanced finite element analysis techniques to optimize these joints and ensure their reliability over years of use. Responsibilities include project coordination, co-supervision of PhD students, and close interaction with industrial partners. The research group, led by Prof. Wim Van Paepegem, boasts extensive expertise in mechanics of composites and finite element simulations, with access to high-performance computing clusters and experimental facilities. The group currently includes 8 postdocs and 15 PhD students, and has a strong publication record and industry connections.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong interest in computational mechanics of materials. Familiarity with mechanics of materials and experimental or computational techniques is required, along with excellent English communication skills. The position offers a net salary starting from 2900 EUR/month (after taxes), with increases for dependents and seniority. Additional benefits include compensation for public transport and bicycle, hospitalization insurance, reductions on computer and internet purchases, fitness facilities, and support for international students through active student associations and regional platforms.
To apply, candidates should prepare a detailed CV in Dutch or English, including personal details, education, transcripts, work experience, skills (such as finite element software and programming languages), mastered languages, and references. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem. For further information, applicants can consult the research group website or download the research brochure. The position provides opportunities for international exchange, conference attendance, and publication in peer-reviewed journals, making it ideal for candidates seeking a dynamic, collaborative research environment with strong academic and industrial engagement.
