About this position
The German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE), a member of the Leibniz Association, is renowned for its research in nutrition and health, focusing on the molecular basis of nutrition-dependent diseases and developing strategies for their treatment and prevention. The Department of Experimental Diabetology (DIAB) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in computational biology or bioinformatics to join a dynamic team investigating how obesity and type 2 diabetes reshape the epigenome.
The project centers on two major objectives: First, using lean and obese mouse models alongside translational validation in humans, the team will explore how interventions such as intermittent fasting, endurance training, and bariatric surgery modulate disease-induced molecular changes. Second, the research aims to identify epigenetic markers in blood cells of individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and its complications. The successful candidate will perform end-to-end data analysis, including quality control, data integration, and inference of regulatory networks, and will analyze and interpret multiome datasets (e.g., transcriptomics, epigenomics, and related modalities). Advanced computational and statistical methods will be applied for integrative analysis of multi-layer biological data, and the candidate will develop clear data visualizations, reports, and written summaries to communicate results. Close collaboration with laboratory scientists is expected to translate biological questions into computational analyses.
Applicants must hold an excellent master’s and doctoral degree in computational science or bioinformatics, possess a strong background in biological fundamentals (including genetics and epigenetics), and demonstrate expertise in programming languages such as R or Python. Experience with multiome data analysis (including methylomics, lipidomics, proteomics, and ATAC-seq) and advanced computational methods (such as deep and machine learning algorithms) is essential. Strong communication skills, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, and fluency in spoken and written English are required.
DIfE offers a dynamic and interactive research environment, excellent working conditions, and outstanding technical equipment. The position is remunerated according to TV-L, level 13, with annual special payment and company pension scheme. Additional benefits include family-friendly working conditions (certificate “audit berufundfamilie”), support for mobility with a jobticket for public transport, easy accessibility by public transport or car (including free parking), 30 days of vacation, and participation in the employee benefits program (“Corporate Benefits”). The position is available for two years, and DIfE is committed to equal opportunities and the employment of people with severe disabilities.
To apply, send your documents (cover letter, CV, copies of degrees/certificates, and references) as a single PDF file with reference number 2026_W01_AP by email to [email protected] before February 18th, 2026. For further information, contact PD Dr. Heike Vogel at [email protected]. More information about the institute and department can be found at DIfE website and Experimental Diabetology.
