About this position

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a postdoctoral position in 16th and 17th century political history, focusing on the Spanish Low Countries and the polycentric monarchy of Habsburg Spain. The successful candidate will join the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE), a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment with expertise spanning the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, and social sciences. The position is part of the FNR-funded CORE project GOVLU, which investigates political actors and communication strategies at the periphery of the Spanish Netherlands.

The postdoctoral researcher will play a central role in archival research, supervise the digital processing of collected documents, and contribute to the implementation of innovative digital tools. Responsibilities include ensuring the publication plan is followed, managing the creation of a guide and dictionary as online outputs, organizing research seminars and workshops, and supporting public history and outreach activities. The researcher will also mentor a doctoral student involved in the project.

Applicants must hold a PhD in early modern history (16th–17th century), with a focus on the Spanish Low Countries or the polycentric monarchy of Spain. Required qualifications include experience with archival sources in French and Spanish, a strong interest in digital humanities, a record of international publications in early modern studies, and experience in public outreach. Fluency in English and French is mandatory; knowledge of German, Spanish, or Dutch is advantageous. Candidates should be eager to work collaboratively and expand academic networks, and must be willing to relocate to Luxembourg or its wider region.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and European institutions. The position is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time, based at the Belval Campus. The annual gross salary is EUR 85,176. The university is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

To apply, submit your application online via the University of Luxembourg HR system. Required documents include a CV, cover letter, PhD diploma or expected defense date, transcripts, list of publications, a writing sample, and contact information for one referee. Early applications are encouraged as review will begin upon receipt. Applications by email will not be considered.
