Postdoc in 16th & 17th Century Political History University of Luxembourg in Luxembourg

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a postdoctoral position in 16th and 17th century political history, focusing on the governance of the Duchy of Luxembourg within the polycentric monarchy of Habsburg Spain. The successful candidate will join the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE), a vibrant and interdisciplinary environment with expertise spanning humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, and social sciences. The position is part of the FNR-funded CORE project GOVLU, which investigates political actors and communication strategies at the periphery of the Spanish Netherlands.

The postdoctoral researcher will play a central role in archival research, supervise digital processing of collected documents, and contribute to the development of innovative digital tools. Responsibilities include ensuring the publication plan is followed, managing the creation of a guide and dictionary as online project outputs, organizing research seminars and workshops, implementing public history and outreach activities, and supporting a doctoral researcher in their work and training. The project is led by Professor Monique Weis, an expert in early modern history.

Applicants must possess a PhD in early modern history (16th–17th century), ideally with a focus on the Spanish Low Countries or the polycentric monarchy of Spain. Experience with archival sources in French and Spanish, a strong interest in digital humanities, and a record of international publications in early modern studies are required. Candidates should also have experience in public outreach, demonstrate teamwork and academic networking skills, and be willing to relocate to Luxembourg or its wider region. Fluency in English and French is mandatory; knowledge of German, Spanish, or Dutch is advantageous.
