About this position

This postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to advance research on cold clouds, specifically ice and mixed-phase clouds, by bridging the gap between satellite observations and atmospheric models. The Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, part of the Department of Environmental and Energy Sciences, is renowned for its expertise in ground-based, airborne, and satellite measurements, numerical modeling, and data analysis. The division’s research aims to enhance understanding of the Earth system and address global environmental challenges such as climate change, air pollution, and natural hazards.

The research project focuses on applying newly developed satellite retrievals, including the division’s state-of-the-art datasets CCIC and CHIP-AWS, alongside emerging EarthCARE data products. These datasets will be used to verify and complement high-resolution atmospheric model data, enabling detailed investigation of cloud processes and feedback mechanisms. The project emphasizes km-scale-resolution models for improved comparability with observations and will also utilize reanalysis data (ERA6) to study long-term changes. While the primary focus is on ice clouds, mixed-phase clouds are also within scope, and the candidate’s research background may influence the specific study areas.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will develop expertise in cloud physics, satellite remote sensing, reanalysis, and model data. Responsibilities include analyzing satellite products, comparing them with model and reanalysis data, presenting results at conferences, publishing in scientific journals, supervising students, and potentially engaging in teaching. The position is designed to be meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in meteorology, atmospheric physics, physics, mathematics, or a closely related field, with strong English communication skills. Preferred qualifications include recent doctoral completion, Python programming and data analysis skills, publication record, knowledge of atmospheric science and modeling, experience with remote sensing and climate model data, and university-level teaching. The position requires physical presence in Gothenburg and a valid residence permit by the start date.

Chalmers University of Technology provides a dynamic and inspiring work environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with comprehensive employee benefits including healthcare, parental leave, subsidized day care, and free schools. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, offering Swedish language courses for international staff. The postdoctoral contract is for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension.

To apply, submit your application via the online form by May 17, 2026, including your CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and goals. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. For questions, contact Dr. Patrick Eriksson or Dr. Luisa Ickes.
