About this position

A two-year postdoctoral position is available in the group of Dr. Supriya Khedkar at Heidelberg University, in collaboration with the Autenrieth lab at the Medical Faculty, Heidelberg University Hospital. The research project, titled "Mapping and predicting the routes of antibiotic resistance spread among human gut microbes," is part of the Health + Life Science Alliance Heidelberg Mannheim. The position focuses on computational microbiology, with an emphasis on antibiotic resistance, microbiome research, metagenomics, mobile genetic elements, and horizontal gene transfer.

The successful candidate will work on computational approaches to understand and predict the spread of antibiotic resistance, utilizing bioinformatics, genomics, biostatistics, and statistical modelling. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining biology, medical science, and computer science. The research environment is collaborative, involving both the BioQuant center and the Heidelberg University Hospital.

Applicants must have a PhD, MD, or MD/PhD in microbiology, bioinformatics, genomics, computational biology, or a closely related field, or be expected to obtain the degree within four months after the submission deadline. Required skills include proficiency in R/Python or equivalent programming languages, experience with Linux/Unix environments and high-performance computing, and expertise in biostatistics or statistical modelling. A strong interest or background in microbiome research, metagenomics, mobile genetic elements, antibiotic resistance, or horizontal gene transfer is highly preferred. Excellent English communication skills are essential. Applicants should not have worked for more than four months as a postdoctoral researcher or clinician scientist at Alliance institutions (co-)supervising the selected or proposed project at the time of the submission deadline. At least one first author publication is required.

The position is fully funded for two years as part of the Alliance Interinstitutional Postdoc Call. Specific stipend details are not provided. Interested candidates should apply via the provided application link and are encouraged to contact Dr. Supriya Khedkar and Dr. Ingo Autenrieth well in advance to acquire a support letter. For questions or to express interest, email [email protected] and [email protected], including a CV and a description of research interests and experience. The application deadline is 31st March 2026 at 5.00 pm CEST.
