About this position

The Advanced Manufacturing Lab (am|z) at the Department of Mechanical & Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zürich is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for the Meta.Morphos project, funded by ESA ESDI Phi-Lab Switzerland. The project aims to advance direct ink writing (DIW) methods for thermo-electric materials, focusing on their deposition onto non-planar metallic substrates. This research is pivotal for developing thermally actuated structures and mechanisms with applications in space, where weight, volume, power, and resource constraints are critical.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team working at the forefront of additive and hybrid manufacturing processes. The main responsibilities include characterizing powdered materials for ink formulation, developing DIW processes for ceramic and thermo-electric materials, optimizing process parameters, and evaluating resolution. The role also involves setting up, programming, and operating DIW equipment, determining optimal debinding and sintering steps, and characterizing sintered materials for density, microstructure, defects, shrinkage, distortions, and preliminary thermo-electrical properties. Validation studies under simulated environmental conditions and assistance with industrial transfer of developed technologies are integral parts of the position.

Active involvement in teaching and lab duties outside the project (approximately 15-20% of working time) is expected. The candidate should have a PhD in Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry, with proven expertise in direct ink writing technology, thermoelectric and ceramic materials, powder technologies, and material characterization, supported by a strong scientific publication record. Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills are required, along with proficiency in English; German is a plus.

ETH Zürich offers a collaborative, international working environment and supports postdocs in developing career perspectives in both academia and industry. Applicants should submit their online application via the ETH Zurich portal, including a CV, publication list (highlighting the top three most relevant), and reference letters or contact details for three academic or professional references. Applications sent by email or postal services will not be considered. For questions regarding the position, contact Dr. Léa Deillon ([email protected]). More information about the lab and postdoc opportunities at ETH Zürich is available on their website.
