About this position
KTH Royal Institute of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in energy modelling for bicyclists, based in Stockholm, Sweden. The research focuses on the longitudinal dynamics of cyclists, including modeling, numerical analysis, and experimental validation of cyclist speed and energy expenditure over various routes. The project aims to develop detailed models that generate performance indices such as travel time, average speed, and energy expenditure for the cyclist population, enabling infrastructure solutions to be compared and optimized for user benefits.
The motivation behind this research is to provide actionable insights into where energy expenditure is highest and where efficiency improvements can have the greatest impact, ultimately contributing to the optimization of cycling environments and supporting sustainable transportation systems. The successful candidate will conduct independent research, publish in international scientific journals, contribute to project development, and collaborate with public partners, other researchers, and students within the group.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, to be completed by the time of employment. Required qualifications include documented research expertise, ability to publish internationally, strong background in traffic or urban planning, mechanical engineering, vehicle engineering, data science, machine learning, or related fields, strong programming skills in Python or MATLAB, and excellent English communication skills. Preferred qualifications include a recent doctoral degree (within three years), experience in field measurements, automated picture recognition, machine learning, statistical modeling, big-data analytics, infrastructure or transportation data, traffic planning or urban planning, and communicative skills in Swedish. Teaching experience is an advantage. Personal skills such as collaborative ability, independence, structured working style, awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, and ability to work in multidisciplinary settings are important.
The position is full-time, temporary for up to two years, and offers a monthly salary with attractive benefits and good working conditions at KTH. The application deadline is May 5, 2026. Applicants should submit their CV, diplomas and grades, translations if necessary, and a brief account of their research interests and goals via the KTH recruitment system. For further information, contact Malte Rothhämel.
