About this position
University of Copenhagen / Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) is advertising a 2.5-year postdoc in the ethics and epistemology of algorithmic prediction of psychiatric diagnoses. The position is based in the Section for Consumption, Bioethics and Governance and is part of the project Algorithms and the Individual in Psychiatric Diagnosis, funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark.
The project examines whether it can ever be morally permissible to act on a possibly mistaken algorithmic prediction of a mental disorder, and under what circumstances. The research is centered on philosophical analysis of statistical and algorithmic evidence, the ethical role of algorithmic prediction in clinical encounters, and the validity of algorithmic diagnosis of mental disorders. The postdoc will also contribute to teaching and other relevant academic duties.
This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates interested in philosophy of psychiatry, ethics, epistemology, AI, machine learning, and the broader governance of algorithmic decision-making in healthcare. The successful applicant should hold a PhD in philosophy, have strong communication skills, and be open to interdisciplinary collaboration. Prior experience with topics such as epistemic injustice, statistical evidence, or diagnostic criteria is preferred but not required.
The position starts on 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applications must be submitted electronically in English by 15 June 2026 at 23:59 GMT+2. Required materials include a CV, diplomas, a research plan, a complete publication list, and three relevant reprints.
Contact persons listed in the post are Associate Professor Sune Holm and Head of Department Per Svejstrup at the University of Copenhagen.
