About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Hydropower Modelling and Energy Systems Analysis at the Division of Physical Resource Theory in Gothenburg, Sweden. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the future of Swedish hydropower by developing advanced models that address the interplay between new environmental regulations and the need for system flexibility in a rapidly evolving energy system.

The research project focuses on developing and applying quantitative models to analyze how environmental constraints impact hydropower operation, flexibility, and system value. The project also explores opportunities for capacity additions, supporting a power system with increasing shares of variable renewable energy. By integrating environmental, technical, and economic perspectives, the research aims to provide insights into key trade-offs and inform decision-making for a sustainable and reliable Swedish energy system.

The Division of Physical Resource Theory at Chalmers is renowned for its interdisciplinary research, connecting technical and social sciences to address challenges such as climate change, energy transitions, and sustainable land use. The division offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment, with strong collaborations across academia, industry, and public authorities.

Eligibility and Requirements: Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in energy systems or applied mathematics. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Experience in energy systems modelling, optimisation, or hydropower analysis is mandatory. Additional merits include recent doctoral graduation (within the last three years), experience in hydropower modelling, water resource systems, renewable energy integration, Nordic hydropower systems, and policy-relevant research or stakeholder engagement. Physical presence in Sweden is required for the duration of employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

Funding and Benefits: The position is a full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits, including generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Salary and benefits are provided according to Chalmers University of Technology regulations.

Application Process: Applications must be written in English and submitted as PDF files via the official application portal. Required documents include a comprehensive CV with a publication list, details of teaching and pedagogical experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and future goals. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details for references will be requested after the interview stage.
