About this position

The Barakat lab at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam is seeking a wet lab postdoctoral researcher to join their international team in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The research focuses on neurogenetic disorders, gene regulation, and the non-coding genome, with the aim of understanding the genetic causes of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and translating findings into clinical applications. The lab employs both functional genomics and computational approaches, including disease modelling with cell models and zebrafish, and advanced sequencing techniques such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, and chromatin conformation capture.

The postdoc will work on deciphering functional sequences in the non-coding genome and investigating how their disturbance leads to NDDs. The group has developed the BRAIN-MAGNET AI algorithm for enhancer function prediction and integrates findings with clinical diagnostics. The lab is highly productive, with over 70 publications since 2017 and significant grant funding. Previous postdocs have secured prestigious independent grants and advanced to successful careers in academia and industry.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Medicine, Health Science, Life Science, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related field, with a strong wet-lab background in gene regulatory mechanisms. Required skills include molecular cloning, cell culture, and experience with ChIP-Seq, ATAC-seq, Cut&Run, Chromatin Conformation Capture, or MPRAs. A solid understanding of molecular biology, gene regulation, and human genetics is essential. Experience with bioinformatics and programming (Python/R) is a plus. Candidates must have an excellent academic track record, including first-author peer-reviewed publications, and be willing to apply for additional postdoctoral fellowships with the host lab. Good English skills (IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 100 or equivalent) are required.

The position is fully funded for 18 months, with a gross monthly salary between €3,598 and €5,669, a 3.5% salary increase from July 2026, a 13th month paid in November, travel expense package, and pension insurance. Extension up to 4 years is possible depending on fellowship funding. The deadline for applications is July 4, 2026.
