About this position

Join the Photonics Laboratory at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Chalmers University of Technology, as a postdoctoral fellow in novel approaches for compact wavelength-tunable lasers. This dynamic research environment specializes in light-based technologies that drive innovation in communication, sensing, and computing. The laboratory’s expertise spans optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics, and fiber optical communication, tackling real-world challenges from long-haul transmission to datacenter interconnects. The team is highly collaborative, with PhD students, postdocs, and senior scientists working together to advance photonics research, both experimentally and theoretically, and engaging in extensive international collaborations. The lab also has a strong track record in commercializing research and is supported by a world-class cleanroom infrastructure for device fabrication.

The research project centers on compact silicon-nitride chip-based optical parametric amplifiers, exploring their applications in super-sensitive receivers for deep-space communication and as gain media in widely wavelength-tunable parametric oscillators. These technologies have broad impact, including applications in optical coherence tomography. The project also aims to launch a spin-off company, offering opportunities for entrepreneurial engagement.

As a postdoc, you will evaluate optical devices fabricated in the cleanroom and explore their use in various experimental setups. You will supervise master’s and/or PhD students to some extent and may participate in teaching at the undergraduate or master’s level. The position is designed to be meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree, with eligibility met by the time of employment decision. Strong written and verbal English communication skills are required, along with experience in experimental photonics, optical communications, and numerical modeling. Teaching experience and demonstrated research potential are expected. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, a research profile related to optical parametric amplifiers and/or tunable lasers, cleanroom experience, and entrepreneurial background.

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with generous employee benefits, including parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish language courses for international staff.

To apply, submit your application via the online form by June 25, 2026. Attach your CV (including publication list), details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and goals. Applications must be written in English and submitted as PDF files. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact Professor Peter Andrekson for questions at [email protected].

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering scientific excellence, sustainability, and innovation. The university collaborates closely with society and industry, promoting knowledge and technical solutions for a sustainable world.
