About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in novel approaches for compact wavelength-tunable lasers at the Photonics Laboratory, Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience, Gothenburg, Sweden. The Photonics Laboratory is a vibrant research environment specializing in light-based technologies for communication, sensing, and computing. The team’s expertise spans optoelectronic devices, ultrafast optics, and fiber optical communication, with a strong emphasis on both experimental and theoretical research. The laboratory is supported by world-class cleanroom infrastructure for device fabrication and has a track record of international collaboration and commercialization.

The research project centers on compact silicon-nitride chip-based optical parametric amplifiers, exploring their applications in super-sensitive receivers for deep-space communication and as gain media in widely wavelength-tunable parametric oscillators. These technologies have broad impact, including optical coherence tomography and other advanced photonic applications. The project also aims to launch a spin-off company, offering opportunities for entrepreneurial engagement.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you will evaluate optical devices fabricated in the cleanroom, design and conduct experimental setups, and supervise master’s and PhD students. There is also the possibility to participate in teaching at the undergraduate and master’s levels. The position is highly meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree, completed by the time of employment decision. Essential qualifications include strong written and verbal English communication skills, experience in experimental photonics and optical communications, and numerical modeling. Teaching experience and demonstrated research potential are expected. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, a research profile in optical parametric amplifiers and/or tunable lasers, cleanroom experience, and entrepreneurial background.

The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout the employment period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment, employee benefits, and support for settling in Sweden, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and actively supports diversity through initiatives like the GENIE project.

To apply, prepare your application in English and attach all documents as PDF files (maximum 40 MB each). Submit a comprehensive CV with publication list, details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and future goals. Use the application form via the provided link; incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is May 8, 2026. For questions, contact Professor Peter Andrekson at [email protected].

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering scientific excellence, innovation, and sustainability. The university collaborates globally and promotes an entrepreneurial spirit, with a commitment to advancing knowledge and technical solutions for a sustainable world.
