About this position

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges, based at the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM). This multidisciplinary research project, BriCE, aims to develop a novel bridge monitoring technique using Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer (CLCE) coatings and camera-based tracking systems. The project integrates civil engineering, material science, sensing technologies (fiber-optic sensors, DIC), and machine learning, in collaboration with the Department of Physics.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a spatially-distributed monitoring system for pre-stressed concrete bridges, focusing on new damage assessment methods based on continuous strain datasets. The research includes implementing these systems on full-scale bridges and validating them through case studies across Europe, including Switzerland and Luxembourg. The outcomes are expected to advance understanding of structural behavior, concrete degradation mechanisms, and contribute to the preservation of heritage structures, reduction of environmental impact, and maintenance costs.

Applicants should hold a PhD in civil engineering or a related field, with expertise in structural health monitoring or concrete testing, and experience in laboratory or full-scale testing of concrete structures. Strong knowledge of data science, optimization, machine learning, and structural sensing technologies is required. The position calls for openness to interdisciplinary research, teamwork, critical thinking, and good research ethics. Fluency in English is mandatory.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, international, and multilingual environment, with high-quality equipment and close ties to industry and European institutions. The postdoctoral contract is for 21 months, full-time, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. The institution promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

To apply, candidates should submit their application online via the HR system, including a CV, cover letter detailing motivation and alignment with the project, transcript of university-level courses, and a list of publications. Early applications are encouraged as review begins upon receipt. Applications by email will not be considered.
