PostDoc in VR Training for First Responders and People with Concerning Behaviour University of Twente in United Kingdom

University of Twente is recruiting a PostDoc for a project on VR training technology for first responders dealing with people with concerning behaviour (“Onbegrepen gedrag”). The work sits at the intersection of human-computer interaction, interaction design, social psychology, and educational psychology, with a strong focus on co-design, mixed methods research, and real-world impact.

The position is part of the ZonMw-funded REaL-VR (Reflective Experiential Learning in Virtual Reality) project, led by the University of Twente in collaboration with the Dutch Police Academy, Aventus, the Center for Security and Digitisation in Apeldoorn, and the Kenniswerkplaats Onbegrepen Gedrag at Erasmus University Rotterdam. The project aims to create novel mixed-paradigm VR training that helps police and community officers respond more effectively and confidently in stressful encounters.

The postdoc will work through four phases: needs inventory and review of current training methods; development of a VR environment where trainees can role-play both first responder and person with concerning behaviour; creation of training scenarios and guidance; and experimental validation with educators, students, and professionals. The role includes close collaboration with academic and practitioner partners and opportunities to shape publications and the project direction.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in HCI, Interaction Design, Interaction Technology, social psychology, educational psychology, or a related field; interest in designing interaction technology; experience with VR systems is ideal; strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills; English and Dutch proficiency, including Dutch B2; and willingness to work partly from the CVD location in Apeldoorn. Applicants should also be able to supervise junior technical support staff and engage in interviews, focus groups, and co-design sessions.

Funding and terms: full-time appointment until 31 December 2027 (19 months), with a gross monthly salary of €3,546 to €5,538 depending on experience and qualifications, plus standard Dutch university benefits such as holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave hours, and campus sports access.
