About this position

The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a two-year postdoctoral position in wetland water monitoring and risk assessment. The position is based within the Department of Engineering, which is renowned for its interdisciplinary research across civil, electrical, mechanical, and computational engineering. The successful candidate will join the ProWater Research group (led by Dr. Silvia Venditti) and the Chair for Urban Water Management (led by Prof. Dr. Joachim Hansen), contributing to two major projects: RESET and TWIST.

The RESET project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) under the INTER/Water4All initiative, focuses on recovering valuable resources—water, nutrients, and energy—from urban wastewater streams. The project aims to develop and evaluate technologies for water reuse and resource recovery at laboratory and pilot scales, including modelling water reuse networks. A key aspect is the operation of a constructed wetland pilot plant at a public school, treating light greywater from a swimming pool for reuse in toilet flushing. System monitoring and risk assessment are central to this research.

The TWIST project, funded by the Administration de gestion de l'eau, demonstrates the full-scale implementation of constructed wetlands with dual functions: quaternary treatment for micropollutant removal during dry weather and treatment of combined sewer overflows during wet weather. The postdoc will contribute to both projects, with responsibilities including teaching lectures for Master students, supervising theses, assisting in PhD student supervision, writing grant applications, project reports, and scientific papers, and collaborating with national and international partners.

Applicants must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Civil Engineering, or related disciplines. Essential qualifications include a strong background in environmental water monitoring, ecological modelling, risk assessment, environmental toxicology, experience in real scale scenario implementation, water treatment, pilot operation, and advanced laboratory and analytical skills. Proven experience in collaborative projects and fluency in English are required; additional language skills in French, German, or Luxembourgish are advantageous but not mandatory.

The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive research environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The position is a fixed-term contract for 24 months, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. The campus provides excellent infrastructure and opportunities for cooperation with European institutions, innovative companies, and a wide range of non-academic partners.

To apply, candidates should submit their application online via the HR system, including a CV, cover letter, PhD diploma or expected defense date, transcript of university courses, list of publications, and names/contact information of 1-2 referees. Early applications are encouraged as they will be processed upon reception. The University promotes an inclusive culture and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
