About this position
Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a postdoctoral position in CO2 electrocatalysis under realistic conditions. The Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion at Empa is renowned for its innovative work in materials and device development for sustainable energy conversion and storage technologies. This postdoc opportunity is part of an international collaborative project involving both academic and industrial partners, focusing on the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 into sustainable products.
The successful candidate will assemble and validate modular electrocatalytic reactors and analysis methods, emphasizing parallel investigations and accelerated aging. Key responsibilities include dissecting degradation processes of CO2 electroreduction catalysts, electrodes, and ionomer membranes under diverse real-world operating conditions using operando electrochemical and spectroscopic methods. The role also involves leading synchrotron campaigns to unveil degradation mechanisms with high time resolution and operando x-ray measurements, as well as developing electrode architecture and modification strategies for enhanced durability.
Empa’s state-of-the-art facilities include catalyst and electrode synthesis labs, parallel electrochemical characterization setups, comprehensive gas and liquid analytics, and a wide array of advanced instruments such as X-ray diffractometers, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared and Raman spectrometers, argon ion mills, and electron microscopes. The position is closely connected to national research initiatives on sustainable fuels and chemicals, offering extensive networking opportunities with academia and industry.
Applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related discipline. Prior experience in electrochemistry and/or catalysis is highly advantageous. Candidates should be creative, curious, highly motivated, and possess excellent problem-solving and technical skills. The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team is essential. Empa values diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strongly encourages applications from female researchers and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.
To apply, submit your online application including a two-page motivation letter, CV, scholarly records, diplomas with transcripts, and at least two reference letters. Only complete applications will be considered. Applications via email are not accepted. Join Empa’s dynamic international research group in contributing to groundbreaking research in sustainable energy technologies.
