About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in condensed matter theory at the Division of Condensed Matter and Materials Theory, Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research group, led by Associate Professor Matthias Geilhufe, focuses on symmetry and topology of ordered phases of matter, non-equilibrium dynamics, and stochastic processes in materials. The group is committed to diversity, inclusion, and career development, offering a supportive and collaborative environment with health and fitness benefits and flexible work options.

The research project centers on the influence of phonon angular momentum on electrons and the formation of novel collective states of matter, both in and out of equilibrium. The successful candidate will develop microscopic models for angular momentum transfer, with applications to superconductivity, magnetism, ultrafast transport, and ultrafast thermodynamics. The position offers opportunities to contribute to scientific projects with national and international collaborators, shape innovative concepts in angular momentum transfer and chiral phonons, and establish an individual research line aligned with personal interests. Supervision of master’s and/or PhD students and teaching at undergraduate/master’s level are possible.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in physics or an equivalent foreign degree by the time of employment decision. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Experience in many-body physics, condensed matter physics, non-equilibrium statistical physics, or phonon dynamics (chiral and axial phonons) is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate potential in research and education, be accustomed to teaching, and have a personal interest in fostering a productive and interactive scientific environment. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.

The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits, including access to Sweden’s generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers actively promotes gender balance and equality through initiatives such as the GENIE Initiative. Swedish courses are offered to help international staff settle in.

To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Include a comprehensive CV with publication list, details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your background and research goals. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details for references will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is June 21, 2026.

For questions, contact Associate Professor Matthias Geilhufe at [email protected].

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
