PostDoc Position in Hybrid 3D Printing Process for SiC-based Metamaterials Empa in Switzerland

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a PostDoc position focused on the development of a hybrid additive manufacturing (AM) process for silicon carbide (SiC)-based metamaterials. This applied research project is a collaboration between the Smart Materials Processing and Architectured Materials groups, aiming to design, fabricate, and characterize advanced 3D-printed SiC-based ceramic metamaterials.

The successful candidate will work on developing SiC thermoplastic feedstocks, programming and optimizing a hybrid FDM 3D printing and milling process, and conducting simulation-based design of mechanical metamaterials with unique properties such as high specific stiffness, strength, energy dissipation, and damage resistance. The role also involves comprehensive morphological, microstructural, and mechanical characterization of the fabricated metamaterials.

Applicants should possess a PhD in mechanical engineering, ceramics, or a related field, with hands-on experience in SiC-based ceramic processing, sintering, machine programming, and simulation tools like Ansys, Abaqus, or Comsol. Strong experimental skills and proficiency in English are required; German language skills are a plus but not mandatory. The position is for one year, starting in April 2026 or upon mutual agreement, with the possibility of extension based on results.
