About this position
The University of Cologne, one of Europe's largest and oldest universities, is offering a postdoctoral position in ML-supported observational astrophysics and planet formation at the Institute for Astrophysics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The institute is renowned for its involvement in international astrophysics projects such as VLT/I, LBT, ELT, JWST, ALMA, SOFIA, CCAT, and Herschel, and is part of the recently approved Cluster of Excellence DYNAVERSE.
This postdoc opportunity focuses on the study of protoplanetary disks and planet formation, specifically through the combination of multi-wavelength and multi-technique observational datasets, with an emphasis on VLTI and VLT. The successful candidate will explore and characterize mechanisms of variability in young stellar objects resulting from star/disk and disk/planet interactions. The project leverages grids of radiative transfer models and multi-scale hydrodynamic simulations developed within the cluster, applying (un)supervised machine-learning algorithms, particularly neural networks, to interpret heterogeneous and sparse observational snapshots in spatial and spectral domains.
Applicants should have expertise in data reduction and interpretation of long-baseline (infrared and sub-millimetre) interferometry, high-resolution imaging, radiative transfer and hydrodynamic modeling, Python programming, and initial experience with ML/AI methods. Strong statistical analysis skills and proficiency in English communication are essential. The position offers collaboration with computer science and ML experts within the cluster and institutional partners such as IPAG (France), UNAM (Mexico), and MPIA (Heidelberg).
The University of Cologne provides a diverse working environment with equal opportunities, support for work-life balance, advanced training, occupational health management, flexible working models, and remote work options. The position starts on 01.10.2026, is full-time (39.83 hours/week), and is funded until 30.06.2029. The initial contract is for two years, with a possible extension. Salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the German public sector pay scale.
To apply, candidates must submit proof of required qualifications, including a CV, publication list, statement of research interests, and two letters of reference via the University of Cologne job portal. The reference number Wiss2604-05 should be included, and applications must be submitted without a photo. The deadline for applications is 30.04.2026. For further inquiries, contact Professor Dr Lucas Labadie ([email protected]).
This position is open to all suitable candidates regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or identity. Women will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
