About this position

The University of Twente invites applications for a 13-month postdoctoral position in operator theory and complex analysis, with strong connections to numerical linear algebra. The research will focus on spectral sets for specific classes of operators on both finite- and infinite-dimensional spaces, with particular attention to the numerical ranges of matrices. This position is part of the project “Optimal Constants as Analytic Benchmarks,” funded by the Dutch Research Organization (NWO), and is embedded within the MAST chair (F Schwenninger) in the MAGNUS cluster of the Department of Applied Mathematics.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research group with both junior and senior researchers, and will benefit from an inspiring scientific atmosphere. The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente is renowned for its contributions to mathematics, electronics, and computer technology, and maintains strong collaborations with industrial partners and research institutes both in the Netherlands and internationally. The university offers excellent support for research, professional and personal development, and access to multidisciplinary research institutes such as Mesa+ Institute, TechMed Centre, and Digital Society Institute.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) in pure or applied mathematics, with a strong background in functional or complex analysis and related areas such as numerical linear algebra, operator algebras, harmonic analysis, or algebraic geometry. Candidates should possess creativity, excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international environment. The position also involves some teaching duties for mathematics and non-mathematics students.

The appointment offers a gross monthly salary between €3,546 and €5,538, depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the Dutch universities' collective labour agreement (CAO-NU). Additional benefits include an 8% holiday allowance, an 8.3% year-end bonus, a solid pension scheme, free access to campus sports facilities, and generous leave entitlements. The University of Twente is a family-friendly institution, offering paid and unpaid parental leave and career support for partners.

To apply, submit your application via the University of Twente careers portal by January 20, 2026. Required documents include a CV (with contact information for at least two academic references), a motivation letter, a digital copy of your PhD thesis, and transcripts from your BSc/MSc studies. For further information, contact Dr. Felix Schwenninger at [email protected].
