About this position

The Robotic Materials group at ETH Zürich invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on the development of soft optical fiber-based artificial muscles for biomedical applications. This ERC Starting Grant-funded project aims to create biocompatible, high-performance soft actuators multiplexed by light, integrated on miniature fibers for advanced robotic and biomedical functions, including minimally invasive surgical tools and implantable devices.

The successful candidate will develop soft actuators controlled by light, design and microfabricate soft optical fibers with densely distributed actuators, and pioneer actuator multiplexing methods for individual addressability. The role includes demonstrating advanced robotic functions for minimally invasive surgery, integrating bioelectronic functions for closed-loop diagnostic and therapeutic applications, and collaborating on real-world biomedical device demonstrations. Additional responsibilities include supervising master’s and bachelor’s students and assisting with teaching the robotic materials class.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field from a top university. A strong research track record in bioelectronics, soft robotics, flexible electronics, fiber-based devices, functional materials, wearable systems, or biomedical devices is required. Hands-on experience in device design, prototyping, experimental characterization, and TRL 3-5 demonstrations is essential. Knowledge of biomedical soft materials, textile/fiber processing, microfabrication, or soft actuators is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for interdisciplinary research.

ETH Zürich offers a productive, interdisciplinary, and international working environment with regular guidance from the PI, competitive salary according to ETH standards, and strong connections with academic, industrial, and clinical partners. The university values diversity, sustainability, and equal opportunity, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all staff and students.

Applications must be submitted as a single PDF via the ETH online application portal and should include a cover letter, CV, publication list with highlights, contact details of two referees, and optionally academic transcripts. The preferred start date is as soon as possible in the third quarter of 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Hedan Bai at [email protected]. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.

ETH Zürich is a world-leading university specializing in science and technology, renowned for its excellent education, cutting-edge research, and commitment to solving global challenges.
