About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on photonic integrated solid-state lasers for quantum systems and metrology. The successful candidate will join the Photonics Research Group, a leading laboratory associated with imec and part of the Department of Information Technology. The group, headed by Prof. D. Van Thourhout and including Prof. Kasper Van Gasse, is renowned for its research in silicon nanophotonics, heterogeneous integration, optical communication, quantum optics, and photonic sensors. The group is actively involved in several EU projects and has received multiple ERC grants.

This project centers on developing novel on-chip laser systems to enable scalable quantum and metrology applications. The research will involve approximately 50% clean room work and process development, and 50% optical simulations and experiments. Key tasks include fabricating solid laser waveguides using advanced techniques such as e-beam lithography, dry-etch optimization, and thin-film development; testing and characterizing on-chip solid-state lasers; and modeling/designing photonic integrated circuit (PIC) lasers for quantum control and frequency metrology. The Photonics Research Group offers state-of-the-art facilities, including unique equipment for heterogeneous laser integration and micro-transfer printing.

The position is part of the ERC StG LASIQ project, which aims to push the boundaries of on-chip laser performance using novel photonic thin-film materials. The contract is for a definite duration, from September 1st, 2026, to August 31st, 2028, with remuneration according to the PD1 to PD4 salary scale for postdoctoral researchers. Staff benefits include training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate (PhD) in a relevant field and demonstrate motivation and expertise in photonic device fabrication, optical simulations, and clean room process development. Application documents required are CV and academic transcript (merged as one PDF), cover letter, and diploma (with translation if not in Dutch, French, German, or English). Applications must be submitted online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before July 31st, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Kasper Van Gasse at [email protected]. Please note that applications sent by email will not be accepted.

Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply. The Photonics Research Group offers a vibrant, multidisciplinary environment with access to cutting-edge research and facilities, making this an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers interested in advancing photonic integrated laser technologies for quantum and metrology applications.
