About this position

This postdoctoral position at Université de Lorraine focuses on the local analysis of structure and reactivity of membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) for Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzers (PEMWE), a promising technology for hydrogen production from renewable energy sources. The research is part of the ANR Multi-Hero project, which aims to clarify degradation causes in PEM water electrolyzers through multiscale heterogeneity characterizations. The project is led by Prof. Zhongliang Li (FEMTO-ST, Belfort), with collaboration from Dr. Liang Liu (LCPME) and Dr. Manuel Dossot.

The postdoc will target microscale characterization of MEA structure, conductivity, and catalytic reactivity, using advanced techniques such as Raman scattering microspectroscopy, scanning (gel) electrochemical microscopy, SEM, and EDX. Measurements will be performed at both the 'birth' (pre-assembly) and 'death' (post-mortem after accelerated degradation tests) stages of the MEA lifecycle. The methodological focus is on developing non-destructive approaches for measuring local electrode reactivity and membrane conductivity at micron to millimetre scales, preferably via scanning gel electrochemical microscopy. Quantitative analysis will be conducted using physics-based modelling.

Main activities include physical characterization of MEAs, development of new methodologies, quantitative data analysis, and collaboration with FEMTO-ST for sample and data exchange. The postdoc is expected to participate in project meetings, write scientific publications and reports, and supervise internship students. The position offers an 18-month fixed-term contract with CNRS, starting September 1, 2026 (flexible based on candidate availability).

Eligibility requires a PhD in chemistry, material science, energy, or related fields, with strong expertise in analytical electrochemistry (EIS, SECM), material characterization (IR, Raman, SEM/EDX), and excellent English communication skills. French language is not mandatory. Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work independently in a collaborative environment, and have knowledge of instrumentation and/or physics-based modelling.

Funding is provided through CNRS for the duration of the contract. The application deadline is July 7, 2026. Interested candidates should apply via the CNRS portal and may contact Dr. Liang Liu or Dr. Manuel Dossot for further information.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
