About this position
The D-ITET Center for Project-Based Learning at ETH Zürich is offering a postdoctoral position focused on Smart Sensors Systems and Edge AI. This interdisciplinary research and teaching group is seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to advance both teaching and research in EdgeAI, Tiny Machine Learning, Embedded Systems, and Autonomous Robots and Drones. The position is hosted within the D-ITET department, renowned for its dynamic environment and commitment to excellence.
The successful candidate will join a team working at the intersection of embedded machine learning, signal processing, and smart sensing systems. Research applications include autonomous robotics, drones, and space technologies, with opportunities to explore additional domains. The role involves designing, prototyping, and validating intelligent embedded systems using novel sensors such as event-based cameras, optical flow sensors, ultra-wideband (UWB) for positioning and communication, depth cameras, and low power radars.
Key research topics include embedded machine learning (spiking and non-spiking networks), attention-based models, neuromorphic computing, ML deployment on digital and neuromorphic processors, TinyML and EdgeAI, ultra-low-power inference for resource-constrained systems, and advanced techniques like quantization, pruning, knowledge distillation, and novel architectures beyond CNNs. Real-time embedded signal processing for perception and decision-making is a central focus, especially for autonomous drones and robotics.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, with deep expertise in system-level design and hardware/software prototyping. PCB design skills are a plus. Strong knowledge of machine learning algorithms, including spiking networks and compression techniques for real-time processing on embedded platforms, is required. Experience in hardware-software co-design for embedded and neuromorphic platforms is essential. Candidates should have a proven publication record in top-tier IEEE journals and leading robotics and machine learning conferences. Enthusiasm for teaching, mentoring, and project-based learning is highly valued, as the role includes supporting teaching activities, supervising students, coordinating lab activities, and participating in research proposal preparation.
ETH Zürich offers a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment with opportunities to collaborate on cutting-edge prototypes and real-world demonstrators. The institution values diversity, sustainability, and equality of opportunity, fostering an inclusive culture where all staff and students are respected. ETH Zürich is internationally recognized for its excellence in science and technology, providing a stimulating environment for independent thinking and impactful research.
Applications must be submitted exclusively through the ETH Zürich online application portal. Required documents include a CV and a motivation letter explaining your suitability for the position. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. For questions regarding the position, contact Dr. Michele Magno (not for applications).
