About this position
Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a postdoctoral position focused on developing an injectable hydrogel for intraocular drug delivery. The Laboratory for Biointerfaces at Empa specializes in material-related research, particularly in understanding and steering interactions of biomolecules, bacteria, and human cells at surfaces for innovative healthcare solutions. This project addresses retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema, which are major causes of vision loss and currently require frequent intravitreal injections due to limited drug residence time. The aim is to create a minimally invasive, injectable biomaterial platform that enables predictable, long-term ocular delivery of biologics while maintaining optical clarity and tissue compatibility.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists in chemistry, cell biology, and clinical partners from Switzerland and Germany. Your responsibilities include designing the hydrogel, tuning its properties, and functionalizing it to achieve controlled drug release using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The project offers a highly stimulating research environment, access to outstanding infrastructure, and support for presenting your work at scientific conferences and publishing in high-quality journals. Personal development is encouraged, and the position is available immediately for a period of two years, with the possibility of extension.
Applicants should possess a PhD in organic/polymer chemistry or a related field, with strong expertise in synthesizing and characterizing hydrogels or soft materials, sol/gel processes, biomolecule handling, and release studies. High motivation for interdisciplinary work and excellent science communication skills are essential. Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming candidates interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful research activities.
To apply, submit your complete online application—including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons—exclusively via the Empa job portal. Applications sent by e-mail or post will not be considered. For further details and to access the application portal, use the provided link.
