About this position

A postdoctoral associate position is available in Environmental Data Science at the Yale School of the Environment, supervised by Professor Eli Fenichel. This role offers significant research freedom and the opportunity to contribute to data-intensive research on environmental topics, focusing on individuals’ or society’s relationship to the environment. The successful candidate will also mentor participants in Yale’s non-degree online Environmental Data Science Certificate Program.

The research component (50% time) involves conducting quantitative, data-driven research related to environmental or natural resource questions, with preference for topics such as feedbacks between choices and the environment, nature-related risk, valuing natural resources, or environmental services. Applicants are encouraged to propose their own research topics within the broad field of environmental data science.

The mentoring component (50% time) includes serving as the lead mentor for Yale’s online certificate program, guiding learners in data science methods, R and Python programming, spatial and text analysis, and collaborative tools like GitHub. The program is designed to equip learners with technical skills to interpret and communicate environmental data insights, preparing them for impactful careers in environmental data science.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental statistics, environmental economics, ecology) and demonstrate strength in applied data science for environmental applications. Required skills include teaching experience, expertise in R and Python, experience with git and Github, and strong English communication. Additional desirable qualifications include experience with high performance or cloud computing, large datasets, and teaching data science or statistics related to environmental questions.

The position offers a competitive salary and benefits, with renewal possible based on performance and funding. Yale University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applications from women, persons with disabilities, protected veterans, and minority groups.

To apply, email Professor Eli Fenichel with a single PDF containing a cover letter, research proposal, CV, code repository or project description, references, and a job market paper or equivalent. For more details, see the full ad and program information at the provided links.
