The Ellison Medical Institute (EMI), formerly known as the Ellison Institute of Technology Los Angeles, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for its Convergent Systems Research Department. This department is an interdisciplinary team focused on accelerating the development of novel therapeutics at the intersection of artificial intelligence, immunology, engineering, and translational research. The primary research area is advancing the understanding of T cell activation and translating discoveries into impactful clinical applications, particularly in cancer care and patient-centered research.

EMI is a leading medical research and development center established in 2016, featuring innovation labs for AI and molecular analytics. The institute is recognized for its vertically integrated approach to disease study and treatment, offering programs in preventative medicine, cancer clinics, cross-disciplinary research, health policy, and community outreach. The Postdoctoral Fellow will play a central role in both technology development and therapeutic research, applying immunology expertise to interpret data from new instruments designed to study T cell activation in both research and clinical settings.

Key responsibilities include designing and executing T cell activation experiments, developing and validating imaging-based assays, integrating multimodal data (imaging, flow cytometry, molecular, and functional assays), and analyzing high-dimensional datasets. The fellow will serve as an immunology subject-matter expert, lead projects from concept to milestones, and collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, data scientists, and clinicians. The position emphasizes experimental optimization, reproducibility, and scientific communication, with opportunities to contribute to publications and presentations.

Applicants must have a PhD in Immunology, Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pathology, Translational Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, or an MD with substantial research experience. A minimum of 4–6 years of hands-on immunology research experience, particularly in T cell biology and activation, is required. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in T cell activation assays, flow cytometry, cytokine measurements, and quantitative biological experimentation. Strong data analysis skills, experience in multidisciplinary collaboration, and excellent communication are essential. The position is a two-year appointment with possible extension, and periodic travel to the UK may be required.
