About this position

Harvard Medical School is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position in Microbiology, with a focus on virology, molecular biology, and related biomedical sciences. The successful candidate will join the Weingarten lab, which operates at the intersection of virology, synthetic biology, immunology, and bioinformatics. The lab's research aims to bioengineer high-throughput methods to study biological processes in hundreds of human pathogenic viruses, addressing fundamental questions such as viral genome coding capacity, immune evasion, and viral adaptation to diverse environments.

This position offers access to cutting-edge research facilities, world-class mentorship, and a highly collaborative scientific environment in the United States. The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with Dr. Weingarten Gabbay to develop and lead a research project aligned with the lab's focus. Responsibilities include conducting research, applying for fellowship funding, contributing to grant and manuscript writing, participating in teaching and mentoring lab members, and supporting overall lab operations.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. in Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, or a related field. Required application materials include a curriculum vitae, a statement of research for PhD work, a cover letter describing your interest in the lab and initial research ideas, and contact information for three references. Applications should be submitted through the ARIeS portal. Selected candidates will be invited for in-person interviews, including a research presentation on past work.

The position is salaried and benefits-eligible, with salary determined by years post-PhD according to Harvard's postdoctoral guidelines. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension based on performance, business need, and continued funding. The position is represented by the Harvard Academic Workers (HAW) – UAW for collective bargaining. For more information on salary and benefits, visit Harvard Postdoc Guidelines.

The application deadline is February 1, 2026, and the expected start date is around March 2, 2026. This opportunity is ideal for researchers aiming to strengthen their academic profile, expand their publication impact, and advance toward independent research careers. Harvard University is committed to equal opportunity and non-discrimination, welcoming applicants from all backgrounds.
