About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow opportunity at The Australian National University in quantum optics, optical quantum technology, atom-light physics, solid state physics, and materials science.

The project, led by Associate Professor Rose Ahlefeldt in the Research School of Physics, is part of the DARPA HARQ program and focuses on building a multifunctional optical quantum memory / quantum light source using erbium-based crystals. The device aims to support quantum state generation, storage, processing, entanglement distribution, and photonic encoding conversion for heterogeneous quantum computers.

The successful candidate will characterise the quantum processor device, improve protocols for high-rate entangled photon generation, and build a single-photon detection apparatus for high-fidelity demonstrations of entanglement distribution. The role sits at the intersection of quantum optics, atom-light physics, and solid-state physics, with opportunities to contribute to student supervision, publications, reporting, conference presentations, and broader international collaboration.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in experimental optical, solid state, or quantum physics (or near completion within six months); demonstrated expertise in optical quantum technology; desirable experience in rare-earth or solid-state coherent spectroscopy, quantum optics, cryogenic measurements, or single-photon optical measurements. Applicants must have work rights in Australia and be prepared for a background check.

Funding and terms: Full-time fixed-term postdoctoral appointment at Academic Level A, salary AUD 89,313–112,103 per annum plus 17% superannuation, funded through the DARPA HARQ project, with a term up to March 2028.

Application window: Closing 2026-05-17 at 23:55 AEST.

How to apply: Submit the application via the ANU jobs portal using the provided link. Include a selection-criteria statement, CV, and referee details.
