About this position

Indiana University School of Public Health–Bloomington is offering a postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Virology and UV-C Disinfection. This position is based in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and is part of a USDA APHIS–funded project focused on developing and validating ultraviolet-C (UV-C and far-UV-C) disinfection technologies to prevent the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in commercial poultry operations. The research integrates environmental virology, UV disinfection engineering, aerosol science, surface science, and data-driven modeling to address HPAI transmission via air, water, and surfaces.

The successful candidate will coordinate and lead research activities, conduct and analyze experimental studies, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, and support data integration across project objectives. The fellow will also engage in extension and stakeholder activities, translating research findings into practical biosecurity guidance for the poultry industry. Collaboration with faculty, graduate students, technical staff, and partners at the University of Colorado Boulder and Michigan State University is expected. Access to BSL-2+ and BSL-3 laboratory facilities is provided.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in environmental engineering, environmental science, virology, microbiology, public health, or a closely related field. ABD candidates will be considered if the degree is completed by the start date. Required skills include laboratory or field-based experimental research, quantitative and data analysis, and scientific writing. Preferred experience includes environmental or molecular virology, UV disinfection, cell culture, aerosol science, research coordination, stakeholder engagement, and familiarity with BSL-2/3 labs.

The fellowship is grant-funded for at least one year, renewable up to three years, with full benefits and compensation at NIH/USDA postdoctoral stipend levels. Resources are available for travel to scientific meetings and stakeholder workshops. The anticipated start date is March 23, 2026, but is negotiable.
