The University of KhorFakkan is offering a postdoctoral fellowship at the Sharjah Marine Science Research Center, based at the newly established Khorfakkan Marine Observatory in the United Arab Emirates. This center is dedicated to providing a comprehensive, multiparameter description of the physical, chemical, and biological structure and function of the coastal marine environment off Khorfakkan, Sharjah. The postdoctoral fellow will play a key role in supporting the collection, analysis, and publication of observational data from the observatory, integrating traditional sampling techniques with innovative autonomous methods to enhance the center’s observing capabilities.

Responsibilities include coordinating and conducting regular in-situ sampling activities, supporting ship-based and autonomous data collection, and ensuring the maintenance and calibration of sampling equipment. The fellow will also perform laboratory-based sample analysis, adhering to strict protocols to guarantee analytical quality and consistency, and will advise on future investments in equipment, staff, and training to further improve sampling capabilities. Data management is a significant aspect of the role, requiring the fellow to ensure all data are handled according to recognized standards, and to support the development of data management and visualization tools.

The position emphasizes innovation, encouraging the adoption of digitization and autonomy in sample collection, analysis, and data generation. The fellow will represent the center at international meetings and conferences, helping to raise the profile of the observatory and its data infrastructure. Training and capability development are also important, with the fellow expected to train staff and students in marine observation techniques and support visitors conducting related projects.

The role involves extensive interaction with internal teams, including research, science facilities, ship services, academic staff, students, and operational staff, as well as external collaborators, media, contractors, and logistics providers. Applicants must have a PhD in Marine Biology, Marine Chemistry, Oceanography, or a related field, or equivalent experience supported by a Masters degree. Essential skills include practical experience in fieldwork and laboratory analysis, data handling, marine science research, publication of scientific papers and datasets, and experience with sustained observing systems. Strong organizational, project management, teamwork, communication, and analytical skills are required, along with knowledge of marine observing tools and platforms.

Desirable qualifications include flexibility, adaptability, a background in academic or marine research institutions, qualified diver status, interest in the wider marine environment, science communication skills, and familiarity with autonomous data generation.
