About this position

Umeå University, Sweden, invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in structural and molecular virology within the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics. The position is supervised by Professor Lars-Anders Carlson and is based in the Carlson Lab, which focuses on virus replication, membrane biology, and advanced imaging techniques such as cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The research aims to understand how positive-strand RNA viruses reshape host cell membranes during replication, bridging structural, molecular, and cellular biology.

The project offers a collaborative environment involving six research groups across Umeå, Stockholm, and Oslo, studying arthropod-borne RNA viruses from biophysics to organism level. The exact research focus can be tailored to the candidate’s background and interests, with opportunities for training in molecular virology and access to state-of-the-art in-house cryo-EM facilities, including Aquilos 2 FIB-SEM and Titan Krios cryo-TEM. The lab’s research is rooted in imaging methods and the study of virus-membrane interactions at the mesoscale.

Applicants must hold a doctorate (or equivalent) in biochemistry, structural biology, biophysics, molecular virology, or a related discipline by the time of appointment. Experience in structural biology, molecular virology, and cryo-EM is advantageous. Candidates should have a strong research record, fluency in English, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Excellent communication skills are essential.

The fellowship is a full-time, two-year stipend-based position, with the possibility of extension. The application deadline is 8 February 2025, and the expected start date is 1 April 2026 or as agreed. Applications must include a cover letter, CV, publication list, PhD certificate (or supervisor letter), and contact details for 2-3 academic references, submitted via the Varbi e-recruitment system. For more information, visit the Carlson Lab website or contact Professor Lars-Anders Carlson at [email protected].

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
