About this position
The Sustainable Agroecosystem group at ETH Zürich invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on co-evaluating bio-inputs for smallholder farmers in Kenya. This project is part of the Agroecology Academy - Africa initiative, which aims to bridge research and practice by connecting agricultural stakeholders and academics to enhance soil fertility, crop productivity, income, farming system resilience, and overall agricultural sustainability. The group’s research centers on agroecosystem management, plant-soil interactions, nutrient cycling, and soil microbiome functioning, all within a transdisciplinary framework to ensure farmer-led transitions to sustainable agriculture.
The postdoc will compile local farmer knowledge on agroecological practices, with a special emphasis on locally produced bioinputs such as biofertilizers and biopesticides. Responsibilities include conducting knowledge studies through literature searches, surveys, focus group discussions, and interviews with local food system authorities in Western Kenya. The project also involves performing a meta-analysis on bio-inputs across sub-Saharan Africa and rigorous on-farm testing of these inputs in Western Kenya.
Applicants should hold a PhD in agronomy, soil science, crop science, or a related field, and have experience in interdisciplinary projects that holistically assess agricultural sustainability. A strong academic track record, expertise in agroecosystem management research, data compilation, and analysis techniques are essential. Experience with surveys, focus groups, and interviewing is highly valued. Candidates must be highly motivated, self-organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively, and open-minded towards transdisciplinary research. Readiness for intensive fieldwork in tropical conditions and excellent English communication skills are required.
The position offers a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure and computational facilities. Salaries are provided according to postdoctoral levels at ETH Zürich, with attractive working conditions. The initial contract is for 24 months, with the possibility of a 24-month extension. ETH Zürich values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, promoting equality of opportunity and a climate-neutral future.
