About this position

The University of Graz invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Automated Chemistry & Machine Learning within the Department of Chemistry. This role focuses on the development and optimization of innovative catalytic systems, particularly in biomass-related areas, using high-throughput experimentation (HTE), machine learning/AI-driven models, and design of experiments (DoE). The successful candidate will operate and automate reactions using robotic platforms such as ChemSpeed for catalyst screening and reaction optimization.

Responsibilities include writing high-impact scientific publications, collaborating within the Institute of Chemistry and with national and international academic and industry partners, and (co-)supervising Bachelor, Master, and PhD students. The position offers meaningful work contributing to future-oriented research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a diverse, inclusive working environment. Flexibility in working time models and compatibility with family and career are emphasized.

Applicants must hold a doctorate/PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, with proven expertise in automated chemistry and AI-driven chemistry. Prior experience in high-throughput screening and catalyst development with AI is required, along with a solid background in homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysis. Excellent programming skills (Python, R) and hands-on experience with ChemSpeed or similar robotic platforms are highly beneficial. Experience with Green Chemistry principles and metrics is desirable. Strong English communication skills and a publication record in high-impact journals are essential.

The position offers an annual gross salary of at least €70,200.20 for full-time employment, with the possibility of overpayment based on qualifications and experience. The contract is temporary for one year, with employment starting as soon as possible. The University of Graz is committed to increasing the proportion of women in management and faculty positions and encourages qualified women to apply. Applications from persons with disabilities are also welcomed.

To apply, candidates must submit an academic CV, publication list, brief research statement (max 1 page), and names of two references via the university's web-based applicant tool. Applications sent by email will not be accepted. For further information, contact Univ.-Prof. Dr. Katalin Barta Weissert at [email protected].

Join a vibrant research community at the University of Graz, where 4700 employees work together on future questions and solutions for the world of tomorrow. Be part of a team that values diversity, inclusion, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
