About this position

The University of Graz invites applications for a Postdoctoral Position in Organic Chemistry (m/f/d) within the Department of Chemistry. This one-year, full-time position offers an annual gross salary of at least €70,200.20, with the possibility of overpayment based on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment, collaborating with the Institute for Chemistry, Graz Technological University (TU Graz), and national/international academic and industry partners.

The research focus is on the design and implementation of innovative synthetic approaches to access challenging targets, including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and natural products. The position emphasizes the identification and development of catalytic strategies for the manufacture of pharmaceutically relevant molecules and bioactive heterocycles derived from lignin. Integration of Green Chemistry principles is central, with a focus on atom-economic pathways, mild reaction conditions, high atom-efficiency, and environmentally friendly reagents, utilizing modern methods such as photo- and electrochemistry.

Comprehensive characterization of intermediates and final products will be performed using advanced analytical techniques, including HPLC, GC-MS, and NMR. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to high-impact scientific publications and grant reporting, and will have opportunities to mentor PhD and Master students within an interdisciplinary team.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry, with a strong specialization in synthetic organic chemistry. Proven expertise in natural product synthesis, retrosynthesis, and homogeneous catalysis is required, along with advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in analytical techniques. Experience with Green Chemistry principles and metrics is expected, and interest in the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass or renewable feedstocks is advantageous. Excellent written and spoken English skills, a strong publication record, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential.

The University of Graz offers a diverse and inclusive working environment, flexible working time models, access to healthcare services, and a commitment to sustainability. Qualified women and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and priority may be given to women in cases of underrepresentation.

To apply, candidates must submit an academic CV, publication list, brief research statement (max 1 page), and names of two references via the university's web-based applicant tool. Applications sent by email will not be accepted. The application deadline is 15 May 2026.
