About this position

The newly established Cryptosporidium lab at the Institute of Parasitology, University of Zurich, is seeking a highly qualified and creative postdoctoral fellow to investigate the genetic and transcriptomic basis of parasite virulence and persistence in Cryptosporidium. The research focuses on understanding how different parasite strains infect hosts and persist, using advanced techniques such as bulk and single cell RNAseq, bioinformatics, genetic engineering, molecular biology, and immunology. The project aims to compare infection outcomes between phenotypically distinct strains in mice at the single cell level, analyzing differences between parasites and infected host cells.

The Institute of Parasitology is a major hub for parasitology research in Switzerland, offering outstanding research infrastructure and a collaborative, inclusive environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. The University of Zurich, together with ETH Zurich, forms a nucleus for research and innovation in Europe. The position is suitable for candidates with strengths in either wet lab or computational work, and offers extensive training and skill development opportunities.

Applicants should have a doctorate in biology, with a focus on molecular biology and genetics, and experience in bioinformatics. A background in infectious diseases, especially parasitology, is advantageous. The lab encourages applications from women, minorities, first-generation academics, and international candidates. The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension for up to three additional years. The salary is competitive and follows University of Zurich guidelines. Employees benefit from flexible working models, childcare, continuing education, subsidized food, healthcare, and various discounts.

To apply, submit a motivation letter, CV, diplomas, publication list, and contact information for two referees via the University of Zurich job portal by April 12, 2026. Informal enquiries about the position, workload, visa and work-permit regulations, or family compatibility are welcome and should be directed to Dr. Sebastian Shaw.
