About this position
Join the Tomazou Group at St. Anna Children's Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) in Vienna for a postdoctoral position focused on pediatric cancer research. The group is internationally connected and interdisciplinary, integrating fundamental biology, stem cell engineering, and computational approaches to uncover unexplored biological mechanisms with a strong focus on pediatric cancers. Their work bridges basic discovery and translational applications, aiming to advance biological understanding and enable future therapeutic strategies.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will have the opportunity to develop and implement novel pediatric cancer models, including stem cell–based and disease‑relevant systems, dissect unexplored biology of pediatric cancer (such as mechanobiology and post-transcriptional regulation), and employ or develop computational and data-driven approaches. The environment is highly collaborative, with excellent infrastructure, strong mentoring, and a proven track record in competitive third-party funding (including ERC Consolidator, MSCA postdoctoral, and Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds fellowships).
Responsibilities include conducting independent postdoctoral research aligned with the group’s scientific focus, conceptualizing and carrying out ambitious research projects, providing creative and critical input to research questions, preparing manuscripts, presenting findings at international conferences, applying for competitive fellowships, supervising junior team members, and actively contributing to a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.
Applicants must hold a PhD in molecular biology, cellular biology, cancer biology, computational biology, or a related life science discipline, with at least one first author publication. Demonstrated expertise in molecular and cellular biology, stem cell engineering, translational research, or computational biology is required. Candidates should be highly motivated, able to independently drive complex research projects, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. German language is not required.
The institute offers learning and growth opportunities through seminars, trainings, and language courses, close collaborations with leading national and international institutions, subsidized lunches, fresh fruit baskets, flexible working hours, additional days off, and a collaborative team spirit. The location is in the heart of Vienna, a European hub for biomedical research and a city known for its high quality of life. The salary package is attractive and follows the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) guidelines.
St. Anna CCRI is one of Europe's leading institutions in pediatric oncology, investigating the biological foundations of cancer in children and adolescents. For almost 40 years, multidisciplinary teams have developed innovative diagnostic approaches and personalized treatments to improve young patients’ chances of cure. The institute values diversity and offers a state-of-the-art research environment, professional development opportunities, and a workplace culture that embraces diversity and appreciation.
