About this position

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites applications for up to three postdoctoral positions in physical oceanography at the Edmond J. Safra Campus, Givat Ram, Jerusalem. The successful candidates will join the Institute of Earth Sciences, a leading center for research in geophysical fluid dynamics, air-sea interaction, oceanic and atmospheric circulation, climate change, paleoclimate, ocean biogeochemistry, and related fields. The Institute offers access to advanced laboratories and a vibrant, collaborative research environment.

Research topics for these positions include air-sea interaction (using numerical modelling and/or observational approaches), the global overturning circulation (numerical modelling), and small-scale turbulence and submesoscale circulation (with a focus on observation and instrumentation). The projects provide opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge climate science and oceanographic research, utilizing state-of-the-art computational and observational facilities.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Aviv Solodoch, Senior Lecturer and head of the Physical Oceanography in Multiple Scales (POMS) Lab. Dr. Solodoch’s research spans oceanic processes across scales, including boundary current instability, vortex dynamics, density currents, and air-sea interactions. The lab employs both numerical modeling and marine observations, leveraging innovative instrumentation to study physical processes in the oceans.

Funding for these postdoctoral positions ranges from 21,600 to 32,450 USD annually, depending on qualifications. The Hebrew University is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, welcoming candidates from all backgrounds and fostering a collaborative and creative academic environment. The university is home to nearly 25,000 students, including approximately 2,500 international students from over 90 countries, and is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 research institutions.

Applicants should hold a PhD in physical oceanography or a closely related field (such as atmospheric dynamics, applied mathematics, engineering, fluid mechanics, or physics). Experience in numerical modelling and observational techniques is advantageous. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential.

To apply, submit three separate PDF files: a letter of motivation, your CV (including a list of publications), and a copy of your original academic degree(s) via the provided application link. The deadline for applications is December 16, 2025.

Located in Jerusalem, Israel’s capital, the Hebrew University offers a unique blend of historical and modern experiences, with a rich cultural and academic life. Students and researchers enjoy access to a wide range of facilities, events, and attractions in one of the world’s most fascinating cities.
