About this position
A postdoctoral position is available at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany’s national metrology institute, in the field of quantum communication and frequency metrology. The successful candidate will join the QuantumFrontiers consortium and contribute to the development of entanglement distribution across optical fiber networks, working closely with the Niedersachsen Quantum Link and collaborative partners.
The position is based in Department 4.5 “Applied Radiometry” and involves supporting the working groups “Metrology for Quantum Communication” and “Frequency Distribution via Optical Fiber.” Research topics include noise reduction on fiber links, stabilization of high-fidelity entanglement distribution, and the development of experimental and software-based capabilities such as automated data acquisition, calibration routines, and simulation frameworks. The role also includes scientific responsibility for advancing the NQL research infrastructure, foundational work on multi-party quantum network scenarios, and investigating applications that benefit from entanglement distribution, such as distributed sensing, time/frequency synchronization, and certified random-number generation.
Applicants should hold a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering, or a related field, with practical experience in quantum optics, fiber links, quantum communication protocols, or related areas. Skills in laboratory automation and data analysis (Python or MATLAB) are required; knowledge of FPGA or embedded control systems is a plus. Candidates must demonstrate strong experimental skills, teamwork, and communication abilities, and be able to work independently. German (B1) and English (B2) language proficiency are required. A driver’s license and willingness to travel are beneficial.
The position is full-time, fixed-term until 30 June 2029, and remunerated according to Entgeltgruppe 14 TVöD Bund. PTB is committed to diversity and gender equality and encourages applications from all backgrounds. The application deadline is 23 February 2026.
