About this position

The University of Basel's Department of Biomedicine, the largest department at the institution, is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a new research laboratory led by Professor Frauke von Versen. The department unites basic and clinical scientists to advance understanding of health and disease, with a strong focus on pioneering therapies for areas of unmet medical need. The new lab will focus on reproductive biology and women's health, integrating basic, translational, and clinical research approaches.

Research topics include mechanisms underlying maternal and child outcomes after assisted reproductive technologies, with special emphasis on corpus luteum–derived endocrine signals in decidualization and endothelial function. Additional areas of investigation are the pathomechanisms of endometriosis using 3D and organoid models, and the links between reproductive disorders, reproductive aging, and premature vascular aging contributing to long-term cardiovascular risk.

The successful candidate will lead and drive research projects in reproductive biology, independently plan, coordinate, and prioritize experimental work, and perform and document experiments in compliance with regulatory standards. Responsibilities include applying and optimizing advanced laboratory techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture and 3D models, and molecular analyses. The candidate will analyze and interpret experimental data, contribute to data presentation and publications, and ensure timely project execution and adherence to quality standards.

Applicants must hold a PhD in life sciences or a related field, with proven experience in in vitro models and assays. Strong hands-on experience in cell culture and biochemical/molecular biology techniques (qPCR, RT-PCR, Western blot, ELISA) is required. The ideal candidate will be responsible, reliable, detail-oriented, and possess an independent, structured, and solution-oriented working style. A team-oriented mindset and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research are essential, along with excellent communication skills. Experience in 3D cell culture, microscopy techniques (fluorescence and confocal), and organoid-based disease modeling is advantageous. Interest in software-based analysis and R-programming is welcome.

The University of Basel offers modern employment conditions, family-friendly working models, attractive social benefits, and access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and equipment. The position is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on funding and performance.

To apply, submit your CV, letter of motivation, diplomas, and addresses of 2-3 references via the provided application link by May 8, 2026. For further information, contact the Department of Biomedicine. Join a vibrant research community in the heart of Basel and contribute to innovative research in reproductive health and biology.
