About this position
The Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen is offering a fully funded four-year postdoctoral position as part of the ERC project "In/visible Women of the Sea (GENMAR)." This project aims to advance empirical and theoretical knowledge about the persistent marginalization of women in the fishery sector, focusing on gender inequality, advocacy, and policy in fisheries across Spain, Brazil, Tanzania, and Thailand, as well as policy studies at the EU and UN FAO levels.
The successful candidate will design and pursue an ethnographically grounded postdoctoral project situated in Brazil, Tanzania, or Thailand, making a substantial contribution to GENMAR’s objectives. The research will employ qualitative methods, including long-term fieldwork, interviews, focus groups, and policy analysis, to explore how gender equality policies are negotiated and why women’s roles in fisheries remain underrecognized and excluded from governance and management processes.
GENMAR is led by Associate Professor Iselin Åsedotter Strønen and offers a dynamic, internationally recognized research environment with a strong focus on marine and ocean research. The position includes a gross annual salary of NOK 657,000, personal funds for fieldwork, books, and conference attendance, and enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to publish at least two articles and a book chapter, participate in project activities, and contribute to research dissemination and organizational tasks.
Applicants must hold a PhD in social or cultural anthropology (or equivalent), with a research background relevant to GENMAR’s themes. Experience with ethnographic research in the target countries, strong analytical and communication skills, and language proficiency for fieldwork are required. Desired qualifications include a publication record beyond the PhD and experience in large research projects or academic roles. The position is based in Bergen, with daily presence required except during fieldwork.
Applications must be submitted via Jobbnorge by May 26, 2026, and include a cover letter, research proposal, CV, certificates, publication list, two academic writing samples, diplomas, transcripts, and contact details for three referees. All documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language. For more information, contact Associate Professor Iselin Åsedotter Strønen at [email protected].
