About this position

The CRM2 laboratory at the University of Lorraine in Nancy, France, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in solid state physics, focusing on the structure of functional materials under non-ambient conditions. This opportunity is part of the collaborative European EIC Pathfinder project 'FROSTBIT', which aims to develop barocaloric refrigerators and involves seven partners across four countries. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team at CRM2 (Laboratoire de Cristallographie, Résonance Magnétique et Modélisation, UMR UL-CNRS 7036), working under the supervision of Dr. Maxime Deutsch and Dr. Dominik Schaniel.

The research will center on the measurement of phase diagrams (temperature, pressure) of spin crossover (SCO) compounds using advanced X-ray diffraction (XRD) and diffusion techniques. The project involves exploring materials under varying pressure and temperature conditions, utilizing state-of-the-art characterization methods including XRD and complementary spectroscopic techniques. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in barocaloric effects, phase transitions, and high-pressure physics, with direct relevance to energy-efficient refrigeration technologies.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in physics or a closely related field. Extensive experience with X-ray diffraction techniques is essential. Familiarity with high-pressure techniques, especially using Diamond Anvil cells, or expertise in phase transitions and thermodynamics, will be considered a strong asset. Good command of English is required. The position is full-time and offers a gross monthly salary in the range of 2600-3000 Euros, depending on experience, funded through the Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder program.

To apply, candidates should submit a complete CV (including a list of publications), a motivation letter, and contact information for references or letters of recommendation to both Dr. Maxime Deutsch ([email protected]) and Dr. Dominik Schaniel ([email protected]). Applications will be considered until the position is filled, with interviews starting in early April 2026. The contract start date is as soon as a suitable candidate is found, with a preferred start date of May 2, 2026. For more information about the laboratory and the position, please visit CRM2 job offers and the FROSTBIT project website.
