About this position

The Microbial Physiology Group led by Professor Julia Kurth at the University of Münster is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the ERC Starting Grant project 'Archaebolic.' This project focuses on investigating the impact of methylotrophic archaea on greenhouse gas emissions, with a particular emphasis on archaeal methane production from previously overlooked methylated compounds. The research integrates molecular biology, protein biochemistry, anaerobic cultivation, and omics techniques to explore the metabolism of anaerobic microorganisms, mainly archaea.

The successful candidate will work on tasks such as obtaining environmental samples, primer design and sample preparation for amplicon sequencing, data analysis, analyzing metagenomic data, and setting up and maintaining bioreactor and batch cultivations. Additional responsibilities include following culture dynamics and metabolic activities using FISH, qRT-PCR, metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis, and characterizing novel methyltransferase systems. The position offers opportunities for creative and innovative work using state-of-the-art methodologies across scientific disciplines.

Applicants should hold a PhD and a scientific university degree in microbiology, biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Required skills include experience with microbiological, analytical, and omics methods, as well as bioinformatics and data analysis. Experience with anaerobic microorganisms, bioreactors, FISH, and qRT-PCR is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm, strong communication and teamwork skills, a willingness to learn, and a desire to develop as an independent scientist. Proficiency in English and a structured approach to research are essential.

The position is fully funded for three years at salary level E 13 TV-L (100%) and includes benefits such as a company pension scheme, annual bonus, and support for work-life balance and family services. The University of Münster is committed to equal opportunity and diversity, and encourages applications from all qualified candidates. The application deadline is January 15, 2026. For more information and to apply, send your application (cover letter, CV, certificates) in one PDF file to [email protected], referencing number 2025_12_25.
